Trump initiated the gerrymandering issue in Virginia, according to Carville and Hunt.

Carville forecasts that Trump will step down after the midterms and receive a pardon from Vance.

Virginia’s Redistricting Vote Sparks Democratic Boost

In a recent discussion, veteran Democratic strategist James Carville and his podcast co-host Al Hunt weighed in on Virginia’s redistricting referendum results, both attributing the push to President Donald Trump’s influence.

Virginia voters have narrowly approved a measure that shifts redistricting authority to the Democratic-led General Assembly, away from a bipartisan commission. This change could give the Democrats a considerable edge in the House of Representatives ahead of the 2026 midterms, as reported by the Associated Press.

The new ballot measure enables the Democrats to potentially secure a 10-1 advantage in the House, increasing from a current 6-5 majority.

On “Politics War Room,” Hunt expressed his concerns about the vote, noting it was harmful—though he’d still support redistricting as a pragmatic necessity.

“It’s a dismal outcome. Virginia leans blue, but it’s not overwhelmingly so,” he commented. “This situation all began with Trump and his attempts to manipulate elections and gerrymander in states like Texas.” Both strategists acknowledged that Democrats, in response, have become equally aggressive in their approach, particularly in states like California and Virginia.

“I think it’s a grim result,” Hunt reiterated. “I wouldn’t have liked it, but, ultimately, the people decided it through a referendum, not like the secretive deals in places like Texas.” He added that Republicans might find it wise to observe neighboring North Carolina, where gerrymandering created an expected 11-3 advantage for their party.

Democrats Face Criticism Before Redistricting Vote

Carville remarked that a 10-1 margin in Virginia parallels a bad situation for Republicans in North Carolina. He suggested that Trump’s self-serving tactics instigated this cyclical redistricting conflict, potentially benefiting Democrats more than it would Trump himself.

“We also need to hold the Supreme Court accountable,” Carville continued. He criticized the court’s ruling, arguing it undermined the principle of equal protection in redistricting matters. He pointed out that the court has become increasingly unpopular and that their decisions have led to problematic situations in various states.

Concerns Over Political Tactics

Hunt highlighted the current political climate, describing it as a deadlock where both parties fear losing power rather than fostering meaningful governance.

He said, “When politicians manipulate voter demographics, you wind up with representatives who lack motivation to collaborate.” The root of the problem, they concluded, is heavily tied to Trump’s influence.

Carville concurred, suggesting that while the Supreme Court is playing its role, the redistricting turmoil might never have occurred without Trump’s actions.

Republicans Respond to Democratic Strategy

In a response, Kirsten Pels, national press secretary for the RNC, criticized the Democrats for their tactics. She argued that the redistricted map silences a significant portion of Republican voters in Virginia, calling it a partisan maneuver designed to maintain power. Pels stated that the RNC intends to contest this decision in court to push for fair representation.
