Russell Brand recently acknowledged that he slept with a 16-year-old when he was 30, describing the encounter as “exploitative.”
The 50-year-old has faced multiple allegations of rape and sexual assault in British courts since 2023, and he addressed this particular incident during an appearance on “The Megyn Kelly Show.”
“In Europe and the UK, the age of consent is 16. I slept with a 16-year-old at 30,” he said. “But at that age, I was a much younger, immature version of myself.”
Brand recognized that a power imbalance was in play during the relationship. He stated, “I think having consensual sex when there’s a strong power differential is exploitative, especially as a famous man with the ability to attract women.”
He went on to reflect on his past behavior, admitting it had been selfish. “I recognize that I’ve had little consideration for how my actions impact others,” he added.
This admission comes as Brand is entangled in a series of accusations that first surfaced last year. Four women have alleged he raped, sexually assaulted, and emotionally abused them between 1999 and 2005.
Another allegation emerged from an actress, claiming she was assaulted on the set of “Arthur.” Brand has consistently denied all of these accusations.
In previous social media statements, he asserted that he “absolutely refutes” the allegations and insists that his past relationships were consensual.
In May 2025, Brand pleaded not guilty to charges including rape and sexual assault. He faced additional accusations later on and again entered a not guilty plea in February.
Originally set to stand trial on June 16 at London’s Southwark Crown Court, his trial was postponed to October 12.
Brand is also expected to release a new book titled “How to Become a Christian in 7 Days” next month, as he continues to navigate his legal issues.
Reflecting on his past, he mentioned, “These allegations pertain to a time when I was in the mainstream media, constantly in the news and making movies.” He characterized that period as highly promiscuous but claimed all his past relationships were consensual and transparent.
Brand gained fame as a comedian in the late 2000s and briefly transitioned to Hollywood, gaining notable attention from his relationship with singer Katy Perry from 2009 to 2011. He has been married to Laura Gallacher since 2017, and the couple shares three children.
