Commerce Secretary Lutnick dismisses Epstein inquiries during hearing

Budget Hearing Highlights Lutnick-Epstein Ties

During a budget hearing on Thursday, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick faced tough questions regarding his past connections with the infamous financier Jeffrey Epstein. However, he deflected these inquiries, stating that the hearing was “not the place” for such discussions.

Rep. Grace Meng, a Democrat from New York, pressed Lutnick on why he claimed to have severed ties with Epstein in 2005, despite indications that they maintained contact long after that. The questioning reflects growing scrutiny of Lutnick amid calls for his dismissal from the Trump administration.

In the course of the hearing, Meng pointed out reports suggesting that Lutnick visited Epstein’s private island in 2012 and communicated via email in 2018. She questioned why Lutnick had previously stated he hadn’t been in the same vicinity as Epstein since 2005. Lutnick chose not to respond directly, instead promising to answer “all questions” at a future meeting. “I’m here today to testify about the budget,” he reiterated, claiming he has “nothing to hide.”

This situation reflects a larger concern among lawmakers about the need for transparency from high-level officials connected to Epstein. The hearing saw Rep. Madeleine Dean, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, criticizing Lutnick more directly, accusing him of not being truthful about his relationship with Epstein. Dean urged him to respond publicly, challenging his reluctance to engage directly on the subject.

Lutnick’s consistent refusal to answer pointed questions led Dean to interrupt, stating, “the cover-up continues,” while suggesting that President Donald Trump might consider removing him from his position.

Despite Lutnick’s efforts to downplay his interactions with Epstein—claiming minimal contact despite living next door—pressure for accountability remains. The Trump administration hasn’t heeded calls for Lutnick’s resignation, and he is set to face further scrutiny from lawmakers in the coming weeks.
