Jeffries Calls DeSantis a “Lame Duck” Over Redistricting Tensions
Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries labeled Florida Governor Ron DeSantis a “lame duck” during an interview with FOX News Digital. This comment came after DeSantis suggested funding a trip to Florida tied to redistricting efforts.
Jeffries expressed concern that the upcoming changes could jeopardize Republican seats, as Florida is central to national gerrymandering discussions, with both parties attempting to redraw House districts to their benefit.
“Ron DeSantis is risking his own Congressional delegation,” Jeffries stated, adding that many Republican legislators might not appreciate the leadership of a governor lacking in charisma.
California’s GOP Seeks to Halt Newsom’s Redistricting Plans
DeSantis responded by inviting Jeffries to a press conference in Kissimmee, Florida. He playfully offered to cover the costs for Jeffries to campaign in the state, suggesting it would be beneficial for Florida Republicans to see him actively promoting his party.
Earlier this week, Jeffries cautioned DeSantis against emulating Texas’ redistricting approach, which aimed to flip several seats held by Democrats. He implored Florida Republicans to consider the potential consequences of their choices.
“If they follow the DeSantis approach, they might find themselves in a situation like Texas Republicans,” Jeffries warned, suggesting that their chances could diminish significantly.
Virginia’s Redistricting Battle Continues
Multiple states are engaging in redistricting efforts, influenced by former President Donald Trump’s actions. Jeffries indicated that these disputes are far from settled, stating that Republicans might be unfairly manipulating the system before voters have even cast their ballots.
As the midterm elections of 2026 draw closer, gerrymandering becomes a crucial strategical tool for both parties. Trump recently urged Virginia voters to reject Democratic efforts in a crucial redistricting referendum, which ultimately passed, favoring the Democratic Party and increasing their chances in the upcoming elections.
Special Legislative Session Called by DeSantis
This week, DeSantis initiated a special legislative session focused on updating a congressional map that he claims will accurately reflect Florida’s population. State law prohibits intentionally favoring political parties during redistricting.
Currently, Democrats control eight electoral districts that may undergo extensive changes. On the other hand, Republicans hold 20 seats in Florida’s congressional delegation.
Details on the specific redistricting proposals remain undisclosed.
