Virginia Attorney General Addresses Timing Problem in Redistricting Vote: The Judge Is an Activist

Virginia Attorney General Comments on Redistricting Ruling

Virginia’s Attorney General, Jay Jones, a Democrat, addressed questions on CNN regarding the state’s redistricting initiative. He referred to the judges who ruled against the plan as activists.

Co-host Brianna Kaylor raised a point about the timing of the redistricting amendment, citing the judges’ view that there wasn’t a proper 90-day interval between when the General Assembly approved it and when voters were able to cast their ballots. The amendment was signed by the governor in February and passed in January, leading Kaylor to ask if Jones disagreed with the timing argument.

Jones began his response by saying, “Well, on second thought, I think one of the judges, an activist judge who was previously involved in this case—” but Kaylor quickly redirected the conversation, emphasizing the math involved in the timing clause. She reiterated the dates and asked him to address the merits of the timing issue as the timing required 90 days, not met with the early voting that began on March 6th.

In response, Jones stated, “Look, this is for the Supreme Court to decide, and we’re preparing for oral arguments soon. I feel confident that, ultimately, the will of the people of Virginia will be upheld.” He noted a recent turnout indicating public support but added that mail-in ballots were still being counted, which could affect the final outcomes. Jones expressed optimism about their legal position and looked forward to presenting their case in front of the Supreme Court.
