Meta, led by Mark Zuckerberg, reveals significant layoffs affecting 10% of its employees

Meta Plans Significant Layoffs

Meta Inc., led by Mark Zuckerberg, has announced plans to reduce its workforce by approximately 8,000 positions, which constitutes about 10 percent of its total staff. This move is part of a broader initiative focused on improving efficiency, particularly in light of heavy investments in artificial intelligence technology.

According to an internal memo sent out on Thursday, these layoffs are expected to be implemented by May 20. The company aims to enhance operational efficiency while continuing its substantial investment in AI development and infrastructure.

In addition to job cuts, Meta will also halt hiring for around 6,000 vacant positions that were previously in the pipeline. This dual approach—reducing current staff while freezing future hires—reflects a comprehensive strategy to manage labor costs and streamline operations.

This decision aligns with broader challenges faced by Meta and other large tech firms as they strive to reconcile substantial investments in AI with the necessity to remain financially efficient. The ongoing investment in AI technology and associated infrastructure is placing added pressure on the company’s cost structure.

There are parallels between Zuckerberg’s planned layoffs and Oracle’s significant workforce reductions, which were reported earlier this month. Oracle, similarly, is reallocating resources to support its growing need for AI computing power.

Earlier this year, reports indicated that Meta had already laid off some employees from its virtual reality division, Reality Labs.

The ongoing economic changes are likely to continue affecting the U.S. economy, whether through the replacement of human jobs with AI technology or, as in this case, job reductions to finance AI expansion.
