Hofstra’s New Softball Coach Brings a Unique Perspective
Susan Cassidy-Reich, stepping in as Hofstra’s softball coach after a career in the NYPD, brings a fiercely determined approach to the team.
A dedicated Catholic, she even had a priest bless her role in this new chapter. Her impact has been notable, leading the program to an impressive 18-3 record during her inaugural season and a solid overall performance of 26-19.
“From the start, we’ve emphasized accountability,” Cassidy-Reich shared, reflecting on her philosophy.
With years of experience in coaching—from Holy Trinity High School, where she celebrated four state titles, to coaching volleyball at LIU, and later taking the reins as the athletic director at Molloy College—her background is rich.
However, what truly shapes her coaching style goes beyond statistics or wins. Cassidy-Reich’s personal experiences, especially those surrounding 9/11, have greatly influenced her outlook.
She recalls witnessing the second plane hit the World Trade Center and how that moment shifted her perspective. “It made me realize that there’s something bigger than everything else,” she stated. This view, she insists, is something she instills in her players—urging them to focus on what matters in the grander scheme of things.
In her tenure so far, she’s prioritized character growth and the overall experience rather than just the game result. “I encourage them not to get bogged down by the small stuff,” she explained.
Cassidy-Reich noted the team has been enthusiastic about engaging in community service, even participating in homeless outreach missions in New York City and crafting Valentine’s Day cards for a Long Island nun. “A lot of them were keen to join in,” she smiled, adding that players have pitched new ideas for community initiatives on their own.
With the Hofstra softball program adopting the motto “Aiming for More,” it’s evident that this season, filled with aspiration and a newly equipped stadium, is poised to be a great one.
“It’s been natural for us to ask for more from them,” she concluded, proud of how the team has adapted. “Honestly, they’ve handled it all beautifully.”
