Chef from UMass accused of killing his wife at Hotel UMass, pleads not guilty

Chef Charged with Murder at UMass Amherst

A chef at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is facing serious charges after allegedly killing his wife in a hotel room on campus. Jeffrey C. McDonald, 36, was charged this past Wednesday in connection with the death of his wife, Emma McDonald, who was 31.

The authorities responded to a 911 call about the incident and, upon arrival, provided McDonald with his Miranda rights. In a statement given to police, he reportedly confessed to “deliberately” beating his wife to death with his hands, feet, and other objects, indicating it was his intention to kill her.

Investigators noted that Emma McDonald suffered “serious” injuries, which clearly stemmed from a violent assault. In court the following day, Jeffrey McDonald pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder and assault.

A call to campus police came in around 7:42 p.m. Wednesday, directing them to Room 414 of the UMass Hotel. When officers arrived, they encountered a “violent struggle” involving McDonald, who allegedly attempted to attack an officer by throwing an object and repeatedly striking the officer in the face.

Interestingly, less than nine months prior to this incident, McDonald was honored as Chef of the Year by the American Culinary Federation. The university recognized him for his talent and leadership in the culinary profession back in August 2025.

In response to the distressing news, UMass President Javier Reyes released a statement expressing deep concern and acknowledging the impact on the campus community. “This is heartbreaking and deeply disturbing news for our campus,” he stated, extending thoughts to all affected, including families and friends. Reyes also emphasized the importance of protecting the ongoing investigation by limiting details released to the public.

As the situation unfolds, FOX News Digital has sought comment from McDonald’s legal representation.
