Evacuation at White House Correspondents’ Dinner Following Gunfire

President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and several high-profile congressional members, along with White House staff, had to evacuate the White House Correspondents’ Dinner after gunfire erupted outside the venue on Saturday night.

According to law enforcement, the suspect has been apprehended and might have sustained injuries.

He was detained at a metal detector located outside the ballroom in the Washington Hilton, where President Trump and numerous dignitaries were set to honor the press.

Fortunately, the president is unharmed, and organizers of the prestigious event confirmed that the festivities would carry on as initially arranged.

Disturbing footage from the gathering indicated that at least five shots were fired from the lobby, prompting over 2,000 attendees—including journalists and members of the Trump administration—to seek shelter under tables.

This incident unfolded less than 30 minutes after the president and First Lady made their appearance.

Amid the chaos, Trump, Melania, Vice President J.D. Vance, and Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt were swiftly escorted from the banquet hall by Secret Service agents, followed by the evacuation of the rest of the Cabinet.

CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer, present at the scene, reported hearing around six shots in the hallway adjacent to the ballroom shortly after proceedings commenced.

“Out of nowhere, I started listening to gunshots in the corridor right beside me,” he recounted. “Then, a police officer tackled me to the ground.” He had just exited the building and was descending the stairs when the shooting began.

Blitzer mentioned the shooter appeared to be at a metal detector while firing. “It looked like he breached security and was inside the dinner setup,” he said.

Authorities acted swiftly to secure the area, restraining individuals nearby and ushering them into adjacent rooms for safety.

According to officials, the gunman was shot at the metal detector before being detained. The Secret Service subsequently initiated a lockdown of the hotel.

Despite the turmoil, Trump was scheduled to return as planned, with the presidential seal still positioned at the podium intended for his address.

The event, hosted by the White House Correspondents’ Association, is anticipated to continue in the future.
