Timberwolves Face Setback in Playoffs with DiVincenzo Injury
The Timberwolves took a significant hit to their playoff chances on Saturday when Donte DiVincenzo sustained a torn Achilles tendon during a 112-96 win against the Nuggets in Minneapolis, as reported by various sources.
Just over a minute into the game, DiVincenzo fell after trying a 3-point shot. He collapsed while moving toward the corner, hoping to recover an offensive rebound.
He remained on the floor in distress and eventually required assistance to leave the court.
This injury will sideline DiVincenzo for the remainder of the University of Minnesota’s playoff run. An Achilles tendon tear typically demands a lengthy recovery, possibly extending into the next season.
“This is just heartbreaking for Donte,” Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch expressed. “He was having such a great season and contributing a lot to our game plan. You could see it in his eyes; it was tough. We care about him deeply and will support him through this.”
DiVincenzo previously set the Knicks’ single-season 3-point record during his time there in 2023-24. He was traded to the Timberwolves right before last season as part of the deal involving Karl-Anthony Towns and quickly became a dependable starter.
Throughout the regular season, he averaged 12.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 3.8 assists. His playoff performance improved, with averages of 14.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 5.0 assists in the first three games of the series, shooting a solid 50% from beyond the arc.
In addition, the Timberwolves lost standout player Anthony Edwards to a left knee injury after he attempted to block a shot in the second quarter. Despite these challenges, Minnesota managed to pull off a 112-96 victory without two of their starting players.
Edwards is set to undergo testing next, according to ESPN.
Ayo Dosunmu stood out with a career-high 43 points, helping push the series to 3-1 and setting the stage for a Game 5 shutout against Denver.
However, for that game and the remainder of the season, the Timberwolves will have to proceed without DiVincenzo and likely without Edwards as well.
