USC Baseball Team Finds New Momentum with Win Over Purdue

In a bid to turn their season around, the University of Southern California baseball team revisited a core concept: winning in multiple ways.

The Trojans, now ranked 23rd, demonstrated this philosophy again on Sunday as they dominated Purdue with an 11-4 victory at Dedeaux Field. This win marks their third straight victory, a notable recovery from a previous series loss to Nebraska.

After securing a narrow 4-3 win in the series opener, USC showcased their versatility against Purdue. On Saturday, starting pitcher Grant Goebel almost threw a perfect game, leading the Trojans to a 6-1 victory while taking their game into the eighth inning without a hit.

Even after a shaky start where they allowed three runs in the first inning of the final match, the Trojans turned the tables for an impressive win. Andrew Johnson stepped in for five scoreless relief innings, helping keep the game in their favor. In total, USC managed 12 hits against five different Purdue pitchers, earning their fourth consecutive win.

“Regardless of the day, we’re going to compete,” said USC left fielder Andrew Lamb about the team’s mindset. “This week, we demonstrated that we can do it in a variety of ways.”

With this emphatic win, USC improved to 34-11 overall and 16-8 in the Big Ten, placing them fourth in the conference while enhancing their home record to an impressive 25-1.

“That’s what a solid program does,” commented USC coach Andy Stankiewicz. “Good teams find a way to win. Sweeping a series is tricky. I liked our mentality today. Even after winning two games, some might slack off, thinking ‘we’ve already won the series, who cares?’ But the players kept it together and put together solid at-bats along with excellent defense.”

Future Implications

This victory not only alleviates the recent pressure from their previous struggles but places the Trojans in a strong position as they head toward the Big Ten Tournament. Climbing to fourth in the conference significantly boosts their chances of securing a first-round bye alongside the top three teams.

Key Moments

Initially trailing 3-0, USC rallied in the bottom of the first inning, with Avery Covarrubias hitting a two-run homer, followed by a double from Lamb, and a go-ahead homer from Isaac Cadena, which gave the Trojans a quick 4-3 lead.

They extended their lead in the third inning thanks to Jack Vasser’s opening home run and a single from Maddox Riske that scored another run. The eighth inning saw a show of power as Adrian Lopez hit a three-run homer, quickly followed by a solo shot from Augie Lopez.

Player Spotlight

Freshman Gavin Lauridsen got the nod for his second start of the season, but after two innings, the Trojans needed a reliable reliever. That’s where Andrew Johnson stepped in, delivering five innings of scoreless action. He allowed a mere one hit, struck out four, and walked two.

“He really stepped up when it mattered,” praised Stankiewicz. “We needed someone who could control the game and throw strikes, and he did just that.”

Looking Ahead

The Trojans are set to face UC Irvine in a nonconference game on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Following that, they will return home on Friday to kick off a three-game Big Ten series against Rutgers.
