Trump safe after armed individual enters the White House Correspondents’ Dinner

Trump commends the media and promises to rearrange the Correspondents' Dinner.

Chaos at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner

Following a chaotic incident at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in Washington, D.C. on Saturday night, political leaders worldwide quickly denounced the violence and expressed relief at the safety of President Donald Trump.

A man brandishing a gun and a knife forced his way into the lobby of the Washington Hilton, advancing into a ballroom filled with Trump, lawmakers, journalists, and foreign officials. This alarming situation prompted Secret Service agents to retaliate by opening fire, causing guests to duck for cover beneath tables.

The assailant, identified as 31-year-old Cole Allen from Torrance, California, was apprehended on-site. President Trump, thankfully unharmed, exited the stage shortly after the incident occurred. Reports indicate that Allen was a guest at the event, and he is expected to appear in court on Monday.

International leaders voiced their concerns, highlighting a unified front against rising political violence. French President Emmanuel Macron labeled the attack as “unacceptable,” asserting that “violence has no place in a democracy.”

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni echoed these sentiments, cautioning against the dangers of political extremism and stressing that “democracies should not permit fanaticism to taint the arenas of free debate and information.”

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed relief that Trump’s family was safe, emphasizing the necessity of unequivocal condemnation of such violence. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated he was “shocked by the scene,” insisting that the attack on such a significant democratic gathering required strong condemnation.

British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper shared her horror, emphasizing the need for democratic nations to unite against political violence. Meanwhile, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte framed the incident as a wider threat to democratic institutions, reaffirming solidarity with the United States.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu characterized the event as an “assassination attempt,” while U.S. officials maintained a more cautious stance, acknowledging the apprehension of both him and his wife. He commended U.S. security forces for their prompt action and wished a speedy recovery for a police officer injured during the ordeal.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney conveyed his relief that all participants were safe but deemed the event “alarming.” Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum simply stated that “violence should never occur.”

In a notably harsh statement, Argentina’s President Javier Milei condemned the attack as “another assassination attempt,” attributing it to “the violent rhetoric of the left,” although this has not been substantiated by U.S. authorities.

Leaders from outside the Western alliance, such as Venezuela’s Acting President Delcy Rodríguez, also condemned the incident, asserting that “violence is never an option.” European Commission Vice-President Caja Callas remarked on the irony that an event aimed at celebrating press freedom was marred by terror.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese commended U.S. law enforcement and Secret Service agents for their rapid response during the incident.

This attack hints at growing security concerns surrounding President Trump since 2024, potentially leading to tighter security measures at major public engagements. As of now, authorities have confirmed that the suspect acted independently, but the motive remains unclear. The FBI, along with local authorities, conducted a raid on the suspect’s home in Torrance later that night.
