Virginia Senators Push Nationwide Gun Control

There’s a saying that bad ideas often start in California and make their way eastward. Recently, it seems Virginia is eager to take on that role.

Democratic Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner are not just supporting Richmond’s gun control measures; they’re also trying to spread these ideas across the nation. They’ve introduced a package known as the Virginia Plan, which aims to implement 13 of Virginia’s strictest gun laws on a national scale.

Kaine often references the tragic 2007 Virginia Tech shooting to justify this initiative. However, a detailed analysis over the past 75 years reveals that 93% of mass shootings happen in areas designated as gun-free zones. This raises a crucial question: is the problem really an abundance of guns, or is it a lack of zones where victims can defend themselves?

Despite this evidence, Kaine and Warner propose extending gun-free zones, suggesting a ban on firearms within 300 feet of many hospitals and mental health facilities. But isn’t it a bit naive to think that signs will stop determined criminals? History shows that offenders tend to disregard these restrictions. It feels like these policies might actually provoke attacks rather than prevent them.

For example, consider a 2014 incident at a hospital in Derby, Pennsylvania, where a shooter entered wanting to inflict maximum harm. Advocates of gun control would argue that such an event should never occur. Yet, this individual was legally barred from having firearms and couldn’t pass a background check. Still, he managed to obtain guns unlawfully.

The hospital was precisely the type of environment gun control proponents advocate for—restricted access for all except law enforcement. Yet those restrictions didn’t stop the attacker. The idea that police can respond instantly is often misleading; sometimes, minutes matter most.

As it happened, the shooter entered and began firing. Fortunately, Dr. Lee Silverman, who was licensed despite hospital policy, returned fire after seeking cover. While one life was lost, his actions likely prevented a more significant tragedy.

Political violence is increasing, yet Virginia’s leaders are taking a different approach. Of the 13 laws in the Virginia plan, one stands out: the ban on firearms in publicly owned spaces, which is currently being enacted in Virginia.

The term “assault weapon” often complicates discussions. It seems any item used to harm can fall into that category. According to FBI statistics from the past five years, knives account for around 1,500 murders annually—far exceeding those involving rifles. So why does legislation focus on such a small part of the problem?

Not only are these bans misdirected, they come with real consequences. The firearms under scrutiny are commonly used in lawful self-defense situations. When law-abiding citizens are deprived of means to protect themselves, it doesn’t hinder criminals; it tips the scale against responsible citizens. If the objective is public safety, wouldn’t it make more sense to target violent offenders instead?

This is an approach that President Donald Trump effectively adopted. The nation has seen remarkable improvements in safety, not due to new gun laws but as a result of shifting priorities. Early in his second term, he took measures to deport violent gang members and remove habitual offenders from the streets. This is what genuine public safety entails.

Despite not enacting new federal gun control laws, the homicide rate has notably dropped. Some may contend that stricter laws are a solution, but data suggests otherwise: enforcing existing laws and incarcerating violent criminals lead to lower crime rates. This should serve as a wake-up call for anti-gun Democrats like Kaine and Warner, though they might dismiss it.

This debate transcends mere policy; it’s about whether to uphold the Constitution or yield to tyrannical approaches. Consequently, gun owners across the nation are initiating legal challenges against various bans. This includes those in Illinois, New York, and Virginia regarding firearm regulations.

The essence of the Virginia Plan is to export these controversial laws nationwide. Should it become a federal standard, it will likely face significant legal resistance in defense of the Second Amendment.
