Chaos at White House Correspondents’ Dinner

As President Trump attended his first White House Correspondents’ Dinner as president, many speculated about how he would address the press. No one anticipated that this event, often referred to as “Nerd Prom,” would take a violent turn in a hotel lobby.

Earlier in the evening, around 8:30 p.m., a loud bang disrupted the dinner, prompting Secret Service agents to swiftly remove the president and members of his Cabinet from the stage. Initial reports filtered in through shaky videos shared on social media by journalists taking shelter under tables, as well as eyewitness accounts via cellphones.

The suspect was later identified as Cole Allen, a teacher from Torrance, California. He managed to enter the venue with a shotgun, a pistol, and several knives, having booked a hotel room the day prior to the dinner.

Before his actions, Allen reportedly sent out a manifesto to his family, labeling Trump as a “pedophile, rapist, and traitor.” He expressed a willingness to target those attending, stating that they were “accomplices” for choosing to be there.

Allen also had a BlueSky account where he criticized Trump, calling him an “anti-social mob boss” and a “known traitor.” The atmosphere at the dinner quickly shifted to chaos as news of the gunman spread. Some journalists knocked over wine bottles in panic, while others rushed to the White House to locate Trump. Erica Kirk, visibly shaken, left the scene in tears—just six months after her husband was killed.

About 30 minutes after the gunfire, my husband and I found ourselves in an Uber, heading downtown, still processing the madness that had unfolded.
