David Axelrod believes Jimmy Kimmel should express regret for his joke about Trump.

There’s a growing call for Jimmy Kimmel to apologize after he made a crude joke about President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump, just days before an assassination attempt. David Axelrod, who served as a strategist for former President Barack Obama, expressed his thoughts on this situation, especially after the Trumps demanded Kimmel’s firing.

Axelrod, a political analyst at CNN, tweeted his support for Kimmel, describing him as funny and courageous but acknowledged the recent joke was out of line. He pointed out that the White House would likely use this incident to push for Kimmel’s dismissal, although he believes ABC should stand firm against that demand. However, he thinks an apology from Kimmel would be appropriate.

Meanwhile, Melania Trump voiced her concerns, urging ABC to maintain its standards and criticizing Kimmel’s remarks as “hateful and violent.” She remarked that his words contribute to division in the country and stated that allowing such rhetoric into American homes is unacceptable. Melania emphasized that Kimmel hides behind the network’s support while damaging the community.

The controversy escalated following Kimmel’s performance at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, where he made remarks about Melania that landed poorly with her supporters. At the event, he joked about her looks, which struck many as particularly insensitive. The first lady’s comments included her expressing frustration over Kimmel’s mockery, stating that it undermines the unity needed in the country.

President Trump also joined the fray, calling for Kimmel’s termination in response to the comedian’s comments. He expressed gratitude toward those outraged by Kimmel’s behavior and labeled it as unacceptable. The president added that Kimmel should face immediate consequences from Disney and ABC.

This situation follows a pattern for Kimmel, who faced backlash previously for comments that drew criticism and sparked concerns about violent implications. He was suspended for a brief period last year before returning with clarifications regarding his intentions.

In a related note, a man has been indicted for making threats against President Trump and other Cabinet members, charged with several crimes, including an assassination attempt. This case adds another layer to the ongoing dialogue about safety and rhetoric in political discourse.
