Jeffries expresses indifference while standing by ‘maximum warfare’ comments

Jeffries Stands Firm Amid Backlash Over Rhetoric

During a heated press conference on Monday, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries from New York reaffirmed his controversial stance against Republicans, expressing indifference to criticisms directed at him. He stated, “I don’t care.”

Last week, when asked about his commitment to a “maximum war” against Republican redistricting plans ahead of the November midterm elections, Jeffries insisted, “I stand by that.” This declaration was met with criticism, especially following what many see as the third assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump during a recent event.

Following the press conference, some Republicans voiced strong opposition to Jeffries’ choice of words, particularly in light of heightened tensions. A Democratic Party official defended Jeffries, referencing a previous anonymous threat made by a White House official last year, saying that the current rhetoric is part of an ongoing political battle.

Jeffries, continuing to defend his remarks, pointed out that phrases similar to “maximum war” were used by the White House during the redistricting dispute starting in the summer of 2025. He criticized Democrats for their attempts to prioritize civility over assertiveness and urged them to take a stronger stance.

His response also targeted Caroline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, whom he called a “disgrace” for her frequent criticisms of the Democratic rhetoric towards Trump. Jeffries remarked, “Before you say anything about the language we use, please clean your own house.”

In a subsequent commentary, Leavitt claimed that the “hateful rhetoric” directed at Trump has contributed to a climate of violence and chaos. She pointed out the potential dangers of such language influencing those who might be more susceptible to extremist ideas.

The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) criticized Jeffries’ defense of his statements, warning that Democrats are recklessly playing with fire by fostering such discourse.

In addition, Jeffries expressed strong opposition to a new congressional redistricting plan expected to pass in Florida, asserting that it was designed to reverse Democratic advances. He condemned it as a “dummy mander” and claimed that the efforts to manipulate the midterm elections would not succeed.
