House Minority Leader Clarifies Impeachment Stance
On Sunday, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries made it clear that impeaching President Donald Trump won’t be a primary focus for Democrats if they regain control of the House in November.
In an interview on Fox News, Jeffries responded affirmatively when moderator Shannon Bream asked if impeachment would top their legislative agenda, saying, “of course not.”
“I’ve made clear from the very beginning that our top priority is going to be to drive down the high cost of living,” Jeffries explained.
He continued, emphasizing the importance of affordability: “You work hard, you play by the rules. You should be able to live an affordable life, a comfortable life… a good paying job, decent housing, health care, education for your kids, and a good retirement.”
Interestingly, although the president reportedly warned House Republicans back in January that impeachment proceedings would be inevitable if the GOP lost the midterms, calls for his removal from office have quieted as Democrats realize they may not have the votes required.
However, this shift in focus isn’t universally embraced within the party. Internal divisions remain, despite Jeffries pushing for a different narrative. While he plays down impeachment, there are more outspoken members, like Representative Ro Khanna, who still argue for the president’s removal, citing impeachment or the 25th Amendment. Khanna recently referred to Trump on social media as “dangerous and unfit.”
Gregory Meeks has also weighed in on the issue, stating that, for impeachment to be pursued, “you have to have the votes.” He expressed concern over a Republican-controlled House that isn’t conducting oversight, noting that Republicans hold power in both the House and Senate.
“Realistically, I don’t have the time… I’m focused on the country’s economy and the American people, and that’s where my efforts are going to be moving forward,” he remarked, echoing sentiments expressed by Jeffries.
