Kimmel Responds to Controversy Following Correspondents’ Dinner
Jimmy Kimmel recently spoke out in defense of his “very shallow roast” during his monologue at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Monday night.
As viewers of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” might know, he referenced a statement from Melania Trump, commenting on her reaction to his joke about her having “the glow of a pregnant widow.” He stated this was a clear joke regarding the age gap between Melania and President Trump and the apparent joy Melania shows when they’re together.
Kimmel, 58, highlighted that Melania, at 56, is “younger” than he is, while President Trump, nearing 80 at 79 years old, adds an interesting dynamic to their relationship.
He asserted, “It wasn’t a call for violence. I’ve spoken out against gun violence in the past.” Kimmel acknowledged that the first lady probably had a tough weekend, as must be the case every weekend in the White House.
“I also think it’s important to reject hate and violence,” Kimmel added, suggesting she should discuss matters with her husband.
Addressing Melania directly, he expressed his remorse that she and others in attendance experienced discomfort during the recent events. “Just because no one was harmed doesn’t mean it wasn’t traumatic,” he continued, emphasizing the need for unity in difficult times.
During his segment, he mentioned that his joke was made in front of Cole Thomas Allen, who had fired a gun at the Washington Hilton prior to being arrested and charged with attempted assassination of the president. This incident had left a police officer dead and added a grim backdrop to the evening’s events.
Following the monologue, Melania tweeted, “Enough is enough. It’s time for ABC to take a stand,” questioning how Kimmel’s comments had been tolerated by the network. Her husband, Donald Trump, echoed the sentiment, calling for Kimmel’s immediate firing.
However, Kimmel responded on Monday, suggesting that if anyone believes his joke had any impact on the events that followed, perhaps they should consult a psychic about it.
He went on to share a clip of press secretary Caroline Leavitt joking about taking “some shots” in light of the recent gunfire incident, poking fun at Donald Trump’s speech.
Kimmel referenced the ongoing scandal as “déjà vu,” recalling his show’s cancellation last September over his comments regarding Charlie Kirk. Just a few months later, ABC extended Kimmel’s contract for another year, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the television landscape.
In a light-hearted remark, he quipped that the contract might last until May 2027 “or until the end of the world, whichever comes first.”
