Jay Bryant Admits Guilt in 2002 Killing of Hip Hop Legend Jam Master Jay from Run-DMC

Jay Bryant Pleads Guilty to Jam Master Jay’s Murder

Jay Bryant has reportedly confessed to the murder of Jam Master Jay, a member of the iconic rap group Run-DMC, which occurred in 2002.

Bryant, now 52, entered a guilty plea for federal murder charges nearly 24 years after Jam Master Jay, also known as Jason Mizell, was shot dead at 37 in a recording studio located in Queens, New York. As reported, Bryant informed the judge that he assisted others in entering the building with plans to ambush Mizell.

“I was aware that the gun would be used to shoot Jason Mizell,” Bryant stated, admitting his actions were wrong.

The tragic death of Mizell in October 2002 came on the heels of the murders of other significant hip-hop artists, Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G., posing a challenge to law enforcement as they tackled three high-profile cases within the music realm.

While Bryant’s confession shed some new light on the investigation, it also left several questions unanswered, particularly because he didn’t name the other individuals involved in the incident.

In past legal proceedings, a jury found Carl Jordan Jr., Mizell’s godson, and Ronald Washington, a longtime friend, guilty in 2024. However, a judge later overturned Jordan’s conviction while Washington sought to contest the jury’s decision.

Prosecutors alleged the men were upset with Mizell over a failed cocaine transaction, although Run-DMC was recognized for promoting an anti-drug message. Some witnesses and prosecutors claimed that Mizell resorted to selling cocaine to offset a decline in his music revenue.

According to the prosecution, Jordan shot Mizell while Washington secured the entrance and instructed several members of Mizell’s crew to lie on the ground. Both men denied the allegations.

Nearly three years post-Mizell’s murder, officials indicated that his DNA was discovered on a hat found at the crime scene. Reports also mentioned that Bryant’s uncle told him about a man shooting Mizell when he attempted to access a firearm. At the time, Bryant was incarcerated on unrelated charges.

In court, prosecutors claimed that Bryant sneaked into the studio quietly, facilitating Washington and Jordan in accessing a rear fire exit.

Currently, Bryant faces a prison sentence of 15 to 20 years for unrelated drug and gun charges, with a sentencing date yet to be determined.

During his career, Jam Master Jay played a crucial role in Run-DMC, alongside his companions Darryl McDaniels and Joseph Simmons. The group gained widespread acclaim during the 1980s with hits like “It’s Tricky” and “My Adidas”, becoming the first rap ensemble to earn gold and platinum album certifications.

Run-DMC was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009.

As of now, Bryant’s attorney has not issued any comments, and prosecutors have also remained silent on the matter.
