Alex Cora Declines Phillies Manager Position After Red Sox Firing

Alex Cora was dismissed from his role as the manager of the Boston Red Sox on Saturday, and just days later, he was offered a new managerial position with the Philadelphia Phillies. However, he decided to turn it down.

The Phillies parted ways with Rob Thomson on Tuesday and extended the opportunity to Cora, yet he preferred to take some time off for his family instead. As a result, the team appointed bench coach Don Mattingly as the interim manager.

Cora’s termination came after a tough start for the Red Sox, who ended the season with a record of 10-17. Following the news of his firing, former players, including star shortstop Trevor Story, voiced their support for Cora and raised concerns about the team’s future.

Cora had a successful run with the Red Sox, leading the team for eight seasons from 2018 to 2026. He faced a suspension in 2020 due to his involvement in the Houston Astros’ cheating scandal. Under his leadership, the team won the World Series in 2018 and achieved an impressive 108 wins in that regular season. Overall, Cora’s record stood at 620-541 during his tenure, with a 10-17 mark at the time of his release.

In an interesting twist, Thomson was let go after a disappointing start of 9-19, which tied the Phillies with the New York Mets for the worst record in baseball. Mattingly, now filling the managerial spot, is said to be the team’s second choice after Cora. He brings extensive experience with 12 years in managerial roles, including five years with the Los Angeles Dodgers and another seven with the Miami Marlins.

Mattingly’s managerial record includes 446 wins and 363 losses with the Dodgers and 443 wins and 587 losses with the Marlins, totaling 889-950 over his career spanning 23 seasons in major league baseball.

His introductory game as the Phillies’ manager will take place against the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday evening at 6:40 p.m. ET. As for Cora, he seems content to focus on family time for now.
