John Garrett, Beloved Hockey Broadcaster, Passes Away at 74
On Tuesday, the Canucks shared the sad news that John Garrett, a well-loved broadcaster and former NHL goalie, has died at the age of 74.
Garrett was actively involved with the Sportsnet team while covering the playoff series between the Golden Knights and Mammoths. The game aired on ESPN this past Monday.
In a heartfelt statement, Sportsnet expressed, “It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of John Garrett, a cherished colleague and one of the most adored voices in Canadian hockey. Cheech was truly a legend. His warmth, humor, and pure love for the game endeared him to fans and colleagues alike. He infused insight, authenticity, and heart into every broadcast.”
John’s legacy will be remembered not only for his impressive career, but for the kindness and joy he shared with everyone fortunate enough to know him. He will undoubtedly be missed, and our deepest sympathies are extended to his family and loved ones.
Drafted 38th overall in the 1971 NHL Draft by the Blues, Garrett’s NHL journey spanned six seasons, during which he played for the Hartford Whalers, Quebec Nordiques, and Canucks.
At the conclusion of his NHL career, he held a record of 68 wins, 91 losses, and 37 ties, along with a 3.47 goals-against average and an .866 save percentage.
Garrett also participated in the 1983 NHL All-Star Game held at Nassau Coliseum on Long Island. His playing career extended to the now-defunct World Hockey Association, where he spent six seasons with teams like the Minnesota Fighting Stars, Toronto Toros, Birmingham Bulls, and New England Whalers.
Transitioning from player to broadcaster, Garrett began his commentary career in 1986 with “Hockey Night in Canada,” eventually joining Sportsnet in 1998.
Over the years, he served as a color analyst for Oilers and Flames broadcasts before finding a home with the Canucks. Notably, the 2022-23 season marked his final year in the booth, after which he had spent three seasons on national television.
“On behalf of the Aquilini family and everyone at Canucks Sports & Entertainment, we are devastated by this loss,” expressed Michael Doyle, President of Business Operations for the Canucks. “John was instrumental to this organization and our fans, bringing a unique blend of energy, humor, and authenticity to every broadcast. He had a remarkable ability to connect people to our team and to each other.”
“He will be deeply missed, not only for his contributions but for who he truly was.”
