Gretzky cautions against underestimating Sidney Crosby's Penguins in the playoffs

Pens Push for Playoff Survival Against Flyers

The Pittsburgh Penguins are still in the hunt for the playoffs, even after suffering a 3-0 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. With Game 6 set for Wednesday night in Philadelphia, the stakes couldn’t be higher for both teams. Wayne Gretzky, often referred to as “The Great One,” has expressed his admiration for the series.

“This is really good hockey,” he said on the Game Notes podcast. “It’s fast, physical, and full of skill. Just great to watch; great for the game.”

Many fans doubted there would even be a Game 6 after the Flyers had a strong start, dominating the first three games. But Gretzky warned against underestimating Sidney Crosby and his team. “You can’t count Crosby out. Even down 3-0, if there’s a team that knows how to come back, it’s them,” he noted, hinting at the firepower they possess with players like Evgeni Malkin. A recent goalie switch has seemingly boosted the Penguins’ morale.

Stuart Skinner struggled in the earlier games, prompting head coach Dan Muse to opt for Arturs Silovs in Game 4, a decision that was likely focused on bringing fresh energy. Gretzky acknowledges the challenge but also sees potential in Pittsburgh’s strategy.

Rick Tocchet, the Flyers’ coach, responded to the Game 5 loss by urging his team to elevate their performance. It’s clear there’s pressure, especially given how young the Flyers are. They’ve capitalized on momentum and are playing with intensity. “Philly plays with guts and energy,” Gretzky added. “I spoke to some coaches and they said facing the Flyers was one of the toughest matches this season. They really play the right way.”

According to Gretzky, solid goaltending is essential in the playoffs. “Without it, you don’t stand a chance,” he said, reflecting on the Flyers’ goalie and acknowledging the skill level across both teams.

As Game 6 looms, Crosby’s leadership will be crucial. Gretzky emphasized the importance of focus, especially after being down in the series. “You’ve got to have confidence to win,” he remarked. Winning Game 4 could be pivotal in shifting momentum back to the Penguins. If they can harness that energy, they could put pressure on the Flyers and take the series to a deciding Game 7.

Crosby, a seasoned player with three Stanley Cup victories under his belt, has contributed significantly, recording points in all three of the last games against Philadelphia. His ability to perform under pressure could make all the difference.
