Trump Gains Support Among Black Voters, CNN Analysis Reveals
A recent analysis of polling data by CNN suggests that President Donald Trump is experiencing unexpected increases in support among black voters, which may cause some concern for Democrats.
Despite accusations of racism directed at the Trump administration, the president’s backing seems to be on the rise within this demographic.
Harry Enten, CNN’s chief data analyst, pointed out that trends indicate a growing number of black Americans are expressing a preference for a second Trump term over the first. He mentioned, “It looks like President Trump and the Republican Party are breaking down the long-standing advantage Democrats have had with black voters.”
Enten noted that during the initial phase of Trump’s first term, his approval rating among African Americans sat at just 12%. Surprisingly, that number has now climbed to 16%. He remarked, “Trump is losing approval in many areas, but he’s gaining traction among African Americans.”
When asked by CNN host Kate Bolduan if this evidenced a broader trend, Enten firmly agreed, asserting that the Republican Party is not only boosting its approval ratings but also increasing its overall strength.
“This is quite remarkable,” he added. “Historically, Democrats enjoyed a 63-point advantage among African Americans. That lead has significantly diminished, and we’re seeing a notable difference now.” According to Enten, the number of black voters identifying as Democrats has decreased to 51%, representing a 12-point drop since the beginning of Trump’s presidency. This has resulted in the smallest Democratic advantage among black voters since 2006.
Enten mentioned that these gains for the Republican Party could play a crucial role in maintaining control over Congress during the upcoming midterm elections. “It seems many African Americans are shifting away from the Democratic Party and are increasingly joining the Republican fold,” he concluded.
