Fatal Accident Raises Concerns Over Immigration Procedures
Sen. Bernie Moreno from Ohio is spotlighting a tragic accident in Delaware County involving a truck driver who is an immigrant from Somalia. The driver, Modou Ngom, is accused of causing the deaths of a family.
On April 11, Ngom was operating a semi-truck when he crashed on Interstate 71, resulting in the fatalities of 37-year-old Luke Soposki, his 36-year-old wife Lynnea, and their 1-year-old son, Logan. Three others were injured in the incident.
In a letter to Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin, Moreno claimed that Ngom was in the U.S. illegally, alleging that he had “falsified his identity, lied to immigration officials, fraudulently obtained a commercial driver’s license, and established a trucking company under false pretenses.”
“He is, quite simply, a criminal. He should never have been allowed to stay in the United States,” Moreno emphasized.
According to the Ohio Department of Public Safety, Ngom initially arrived in the U.S. in the 1990s and subsequently acquired various state and federal identifications using different names and dates of birth. Investigators found that he managed to get a new Ohio driver’s license under a false identity around 2003, then secured a CDL in 2007, and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in the mid-2010s using that same identity. He reverted back to using his name, Modou Gong, from his alias, Ramin Gay, as per state records.
This situation highlights a failure not just in administration but in the entire system, resulting in severe consequences. An innocent family, including a toddler, lost their lives due to the actions of someone who shouldn’t have been on the road, especially given his prior safety violations. When the federal government neglects to secure our borders, it’s everyday American families who face the repercussions. The fact that he was not apprehended during the Biden administration is troubling. We must extract lessons from this avoidable tragedy.
Ngom was indicted on April 16 for vehicular homicide and vehicular assault. Yet Moreno insists that the DOJ should also pursue charges against him for immigration fraud and providing false information.
Moreover, Moreno encouraged the State Department to initiate denaturalization proceedings if it is determined that Ngom acquired his citizenship through deceit or misrepresentation.
These types of tragedies are preventable through strict immigration law enforcement. Thankfully, former President Trump made significant strides in removing illegal aliens from our nation. We need to prioritize the safety of American families over those who disregard our laws. Ignoring this responsibility results in real, harmful consequences for society. If we cannot protect our citizens, our immigration and approval systems are not just broken—they’re complicit.
Moreno seeks clarity on how Ngom entered the United States, the false identities he employed to obtain various identifications, the documents used for his citizenship, and what actions the Department of Transportation and DHS will take to close the loopholes that allowed Ngom to secure his CDL.
