Colts opt not to take Anthony Richardson's fifth-year option before 2026

The Indianapolis Colts have decided not to exercise quarterback Anthony Richardson’s fifth-year option.

Richardson, who was picked fourth overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, will be eligible for free agency following the 2026 season.

This decision comes as no surprise to many, considering Richardson’s inconsistent performances and injury struggles during his early NFL career. Because of these issues, the Colts will likely seek a new quarterback before the 2025 season begins.

When Indianapolis drafted Richardson, expectations were high, although there were lingering doubts about his immediate readiness for professional play.

In 2023, he shared starting duties with veteran Gardner Minshew, eventually being benched in 2024 when Joe Flacco took over. However, Richardson regained his starting role later that season.

Things got a bit more complicated when Richardson was sidelined due to a freak injury sustained during warm-ups, which resulted in a fractured orbital bone. Earlier in his rookie year, he also had to deal with a significant shoulder injury that required surgery.

In the current season, Richardson is backing up newly signed quarterback Daniel Jones, who joined the Colts after being released by the New York Giants. Jones signed a lucrative two-year deal with Indianapolis, further complicating Richardson’s position on the team.

As Richardson approaches his fourth NFL season, he finds himself in a crucial situation regarding his future, whether with the Colts or another franchise.
