Dramatic Rescue in North Texas Floods
In North Texas, police are sharing a remarkable story of a nighttime rescue involving a mother and her children who were trapped in rapidly rising floodwaters. It all unfolded late on April 25, around 11:12 p.m., as officers were already out tackling the severe storms and flash flooding affecting the area.
Body camera footage released by the White Settlement Police Department reveals the intense moments as officers endeavored to keep the mother safe while swiftly getting her children to safety. Sgt. John Banner discovered a vehicle caught in high water, with its front end stuck in a channel that led to a stream.
When Banner reached the scene, three young children were outside the vehicle, and he immediately moved them to a patrol SUV. However, their mother was still stranded near the car door, struggling against the current. In the footage, you can hear the officer shouting, “Alright! Everyone get in the car!” while the mother calls for help.
As the water continued to rise around the vehicle, officers began to brainstorm ways to rescue her without being swept away themselves. One officer shouted, “Keep your footing! … We need help!” It was then that Officer Christopher Wiseman grabbed a set of jumper cables and suggested a makeshift safety harness for the mother to help secure her if she started slipping.
Throughout the ordeal, an officer reminded everyone, “Don’t let it get you down,” highlighting the precariousness of the situation for both the victims and the responders. They communicated their concerns as the woman grew increasingly exhausted, with one officer admitting, “My legs are getting tired. I need a ladder.”
Firefighters from the White Settlement Fire Department arrived shortly thereafter, managing to tie ropes to the car and pull it back toward dry land. Shockingly, neither the mother nor her children suffered any injuries during the incident, which was praised by officials as an example of teamwork and quick thinking.
Police Chief Christopher Cook commended the response of officers, saying, “We appreciate the proactive response of Officer John Banner and his team,” and emphasized the creativity displayed, particularly when using the jumper cables as a safety tool.
City Manager Jeffrey J. James also applauded the bravery of the officers, stating how they did everything in their power to save lives. The calmness of the mother, who had instructed her children on how to find higher ground earlier, undoubtedly played a role in preventing injuries.
Following this event, officials announced plans to equip each patrol car with a water rescue throw bag, aiming to enhance future emergency responses. This incident serves as a stark reminder of how swiftly flash floods can escalate into life-threatening situations and the critical importance of making quick, informed decisions when lives are at stake.
