UK Raises Terror Threat Level After Stabbing Incident
On Thursday, the UK increased its national terror threat level to “severe,” citing a recent anti-Semitic stabbing in Golders Green and indicating that new terrorist attacks are considered “very high” in the next six months.
The Joint Terrorism Analysis Center (JTAC) made this change just a day after two individuals were fatally stabbed in north London, a case that has been classified as a terrorist incident by the police.
Authorities clarified that the decision wasn’t solely because of the Golders Green attack; rather, it reflects a broader and troubling rise in far-right terrorism throughout the UK.
Interior Minister Shabana Mahmoud condemned the event as “an abhorrent anti-Semitic attack,” expressing concern particularly for the Jewish community, which has faced significant suffering.
Police Response
Police responded to reports of multiple stabbings at Highfield Road in Barnet around 11:16 a.m. on Wednesday. The two victims, aged 76 and 34, received immediate care for their stab wounds before being transported to the hospital, where they are said to be recovering.
Authorities identified the suspect as 45-year-old Essa Suleiman, a Somali-born British national, known for a history of serious violence and mental health issues.
Assistant Commissioner Lawrence Taylor indicated that the attack is now officially considered a terrorist act, with counter-terrorism officers collaborating with security agencies to gather more information.
Community Reactions
Protests took place in Downing Street on Thursday, where demonstrators voiced their fear that not enough is being done to protect the Jewish community. Following this attack, alongside an uptick in anti-Semitic arson incidents in London, the government announced an additional £25 million in funds aimed at enhancing security for Jewish communities, bringing total support this year to £58 million. The funds are intended to bolster police patrols and enhance security at synagogues, schools, and community centers.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar criticized the British government, arguing that it cannot genuinely fight anti-Semitism while allowing “blatant incitement against the Jewish state.” He emphasized the need to ban hate speech and anti-Semitic demonstrations in London, stating that these actions contribute to fear among Jewish individuals.
In a statement from Shomrim, a volunteer group dedicated to the safety of the Orthodox Jewish community, it was noted that the suspect was seen wielding a knife on Golders Green Road before being subdued by community members prior to police arrival. Detective Chief Inspector Luke Williams mentioned that officers were deployed swiftly and arrested the suspect before further harm could occur, as investigators explore all possible motives.
The last time the UK was at a ‘severe’ threat level was in November 2021, following significant incidents including the Liverpool Women’s Hospital bombing.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the violence, labeling the attack on Jewish individuals an “attack on Britain.” Meanwhile, London Mayor Sadiq Khan stated that there is “no place for anti-Semitism” in the city.
