Wellesley Tragedy: Mother Charged in Children’s Deaths

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Janet McCosland’s life seemed idyllic: a loving family, a luxurious $1.5 million home in a wealthy suburb, and a thriving career.

Yet, beneath this surface, everything was unraveling. Her marriage was in turmoil, with her husband embroiled in disputes over their home and children.

Now, this mother, who appeared to have it together, faces serious allegations of murdering her two young children. Friends and family are left shocked, grappling with how such a tragedy remained unnoticed.

“When I heard, it hit me hard, probably the biggest shock ever,” a friend shared, still processing the news. “I can’t quite wrap my mind around it. Everything seemed normal. Nothing hinted at this.” 

The friend, who chose to remain unnamed, described McCosland as kind and approachable, both publicly and privately.

Known as an acupuncturist and meditation teacher, she spoke about her children lovingly, much like any devoted mother would.

Just half a year ago, McCosland was involved in discussions about school conferences concerning her two children, Kai, 7, and Ella, 6, highlighting the contrast to the grim events that unfolded recently. Allegedly, she confessed to strangling her children in their home.

“Total disbelief,” replied one official after hearing the news of her arrest at a relative’s Vermont residence. The transformation from the woman they knew to that depicted in her mug shot was unfathomable.

In their last conversation weeks prior, everything seemed fine, raising further questions.

Yet, McCosland’s life was far from perfect. A bitter divorce and custody battle with her estranged husband lingered behind the scenes.

They had been separated since last October, filing for divorce due to what they cited as an “irretrievable breakdown” in their nine-year marriage, with a fierce custody dispute over their home and children ongoing.

Despite distress behind closed doors, to outsiders, the family still appeared perfect. Former babysitter Cale Dollar remarked that visits to their house felt normal.

Then, just two days after the children’s tragic deaths, McCosland was found with severe injuries and a message indicating she had harmed the children and attempted self-harm.

Authorities discovered the children’s bodies upon returning to their home. The father, described as volatile during a emergency call, once regarded fatherhood as his greatest joy, according to a family friend.

Nearly 500 people gathered at a local church to mourn the young victims, where emotions ran high, and children expressed feelings of shock and heartbreak.

A touching memorial outside their home included flowers, candles, and stuffed animals, with one bear marked “Kai and Ella” in their handwriting.

McCosland, previously working as an acupuncturist, is now in Vermont facing charges related to her escape. In court, she agreed to return to Massachusetts to address two murder charges.

Her next court date in Vermont is scheduled for May 11.
