DeSantis Reengages with Trump’s Domestic Agenda

After being relatively quiet for some time, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is now stepping in to support President Trump’s domestic initiatives.

DeSantis, who will conclude his term in January 2027, became a notable figure among conservatives during the COVID-19 pandemic. His confrontations with public health officials, combined with his views on vaccines and a more hands-off governance approach, set him apart, especially as many blue states followed strict guidelines laid out by Dr. Anthony Fauci.

However, his popularity took a hit following a not-so-successful run for the 2024 presidency. It seemed, perhaps, that the campaign had little chance from the start. He also made several political allies and enemies in Trump’s circle, which complicated things further.

Yet, in the past 16 months, DeSantis has reemerged, aligning himself closely with Trump’s policies.

Coordinating efforts with ICE, DeSantis played a role in launching Operation Tidal Wave, which led to the apprehension of over 10,000 undocumented immigrants. In July 2025, plans for Alligator Alcatraz, a significant detention facility in the Everglades, were greenlit. Shortly after, he announced a second detention center, dubbed a “deportation center.” It was quite the push in a complex and often contentious area.

Beyond immigration, DeSantis also initiated a statewide version of the Department of Government Efficiency. He was involved with Trump’s reforms regarding rules on how colleges can pay student-athletes based on their name, image, and likeness. After Trump signed an executive order for increased federal oversight on this issue, DeSantis voiced his approval, deeming it a commendable move towards revitalizing college sports.

Additionally, DeSantis has been attentive to the establishment of a Trump presidential library, offering a portion of waterfront property in Miami for its future site. He mentioned that securing such a library in Miami would benefit both the state and the city, asserting that Florida has been a strong supporter of Trump’s policies and expressing pride in leading the efforts to bring this project to fruition.

As his term approaches its close, some speculate whether DeSantis might be considering a position in a future Trump administration—or maybe these recent engagements hint at ambitions for 2028.

In a recent podcast with Sean Hannity, DeSantis alluded to another possible presidential run, indicating that Trump may have overshadowed his chances in the 2024 nomination race.

“Let’s see,” he remarked. “I think those who backed Trump would have leaned heavily toward me, had he not entered the race.” He added, “Conservative voters were looking for someone like me.” Though the timing, it seems, wasn’t quite right.

So, is a second attempt on the horizon?

“We’ll have to see what happens,” DeSantis remarked to Hannity.
