Gavin Newsom criticized for $20M investment in solar-covered canal

Newsom’s Solar Project Faces Online Criticism

Governor Gavin Newsom is experiencing backlash online following the announcement of a sizable solar power initiative, as critics point to the project’s hefty price tag.

The state revealed plans to allocate $20 million toward a new green initiative involving the covering of canals with solar panels. This project aims to conserve water while producing electricity.

In a post on X, Newsom highlighted California’s commitment to clean energy, contrasting it with the previous administration’s approach. He stated, “While the Trump administration phased out clean energy in favor of fossil fuels, California is moving ahead with the nation’s first solar-powered canal pilot project. We are investing in new technologies to find further solutions to reduce costs, save water, and prepare for a hotter, drier future.”

However, many users on X expressed skepticism regarding this announcement, referencing past allegations of government inefficiencies linked to Newsom. Comments ranged from doubts about funding to sarcasm over lengthy project completion timelines.

One commenter referenced California’s high-speed rail project, questioning, “Wow. It costs $251 billion and it’s not going to be built?” Another expressed impatience humorously, saying they couldn’t wait for their great-great-grandchildren to see the project completed.

Another commenter joked, “Just a guess, we’re already $600 million over budget, right?” while another bluntly remarked, “Do you know who can use that water? The fire department!”—a nod to the ongoing wildfire crisis in the state.

Despite the criticism, Newsom defended the solar initiative, calling it “innovative” and planning for a brighter, more sustainable approach to California’s climate challenges.

He emphasized in a press release, “We remain committed to investing in clean energy and developing cutting-edge technologies to address climate and water challenges. California is showing the world what’s possible when innovation and action meet.”

The canal project, referred to as Project Nexus, aims to evaluate the energy output of the solar panels, the water savings achieved, the quality of the water, and whether the solar coverage can lessen maintenance costs.

The California Post has attempted to reach Newsom’s office for further comments.
