Ohio Democrat Opposes DHS Funding: Americans Want Their Leaders to Ensure Their Safety

Rep. Greg Landsman’s Stance on Public Safety

Rep. Greg Landsman, a Democrat from Ohio, emphasized that Americans expect their leaders to prioritize public safety. This statement contrasts sharply with his previous votes against two House bills aimed at funding the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) during an unprecedented federal shutdown.

In a July conversation with Rahm Emanuel on the New Democratic Coalition podcast, Landsman stated that it’s crucial for leaders to take safety seriously, as noted in exclusive footage shared with Breitbart News.

These comments come on the heels of Landsman’s votes against funding proposals by House Republicans earlier this year for the DHS. A spokesperson for the Republican National Committee criticized Landsman’s decisions, stating that if he truly cared about the safety of Ohio residents, he wouldn’t jeopardize DHS funding or require TSA agents to work without pay for weeks. This perspective poses a question about the integrity of his political actions.

The DHS faced an extended closure lasting 76 days. On April 30, 2026, Congress eventually passed a funding bill for essential components, including the Secret Service and TSA, but left other elements, such as funding for ICE and Border Patrol, unresolved. A White House memorandum from March 27 highlighted the ramifications of this shutdown, including over 60,000 TSA employees who went unpaid, with some even being laid off, resulting in significant delays at airports.

As staffing issues became more pronounced, ICE officers had to step in for airport duties. Reports indicated that around 3,000 TSA agents failed to show up for work, further adding stress to operations. The urgency of these issues spiked following a serious incident involving an assassination attempt against President Donald Trump during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

The suspect, identified as Cole Thomas Allen, had dangerous intentions and reportedly attempted to target officials from the Trump administration. Interestingly, he made a $25 donation to Kamala Harris’ 2024 campaign.

The DHS closure coincided with other dangerous events in the U.S., such as a tragic mass shooting in Austin, where three people were killed, and multiple others injured. Another incident occurred in Michigan, where a vehicle crashed into a synagogue, leading to a lethal confrontation with security. Luckily, no casualties were reported within the synagogue, even as the situation unfolded dramatically.

Additionally, on April 30, Landsman remarked that he dismissed an Instagram post by former FBI Director James Comey, which contained an ambiguous message. He found it unreasonable to interpret the post as a threat toward President Trump.

Landsman serves Ohio’s 1st Congressional District, which is considered one of the few swing districts and a major target for Republicans in the upcoming 2026 elections. Former Air Force veteran Eric Conroy, backed by Republican Senator Bernie Moreno, is campaigning to unseat him, aiming to highlight the importance of winning such districts to maintain control of the House.

Notably, during his time on the Cincinnati City Council, Landsman proposed reallocating funds from the police budget to other community services amid a spike in violent crime, which some critiques deemed as a move towards defunding the police.
