Tragic Plane Crash in Texas Claims Lives of Pickleball Team
On Thursday night, a small aircraft carrying a pickleball team to a tournament crashed in Texas, resulting in the deaths of all five individuals on board.
The identities of the victims were not disclosed immediately, but the Amarillo Pickleball Club confirmed that they were members who had traveled to compete. The crash occurred around 11 p.m. in Wimberley, located roughly 40 miles southwest of Austin.
Local police Sergeant Billy Ray stated, “The pilot and four passengers were pronounced dead at the scene.”
Investigation of the incident is being led by federal authorities, as noted by Sergeant Ray.
Dan Dyer, the president of the Amarillo Pickleball Club, shared that he had played many matches alongside four of the deceased. “I gave them medals. They were great players. They were going to win some of the games,” he remarked. He added that numerous tournaments take place every weekend, and while some people may not catch the ‘pickleball bug,’ those who do often travel extensively for competitions.
As a second plane was also en route to the tournament from Amarillo, it landed safely at the New Braunfels airport, approximately 30 miles northeast of San Antonio. Air traffic control audio revealed that the pilot of the second plane mentioned, “I haven’t heard anything from him.” The controller responded, indicating that the troubled plane had started behaving erratically.
Emergency signals from the troubled aircraft were confirmed by at least one pilot on the scene, prompting the air traffic controller to notify 911.
The National Weather Service reported mostly cloudy conditions in the New Braunfels area just prior to the crash, with thunderstorms developing two hours afterward.
Wimberley, home to about 3,000 residents, and New Braunfels, which has around 116,000 people, are both popular tourist locations in the Texas Hill Country.
