Giants blanked for the seventh time, suffer fourth consecutive loss for the third time this season

The Giants were hoping for a break from the rain during their trip to Florida, but weather-related doubleheaders led to delays. Unfortunately, they didn’t find much relief even in the air-conditioned comfort of Tropicana Field.

In their first game against the Rays, the Giants faced yet another disappointment, losing 3-0. They struggled to find any offensive momentum, failing to score and never even holding a lead.

Robbie Ray allowed solo home runs to both Yandy Diaz and Junior Caminero. Sadly, it was Shane McClanahan who proved to be the real challenge for the Giants, as their batting lineup seemed unable to respond. He managed to overshadow one of his six hits with a walk and two double plays.

The Rays executed a sharp 5-4-3 double play in the fifth inning off Gerard Encarnacion’s ground ball. They thwarted another possible score by closing out the inning when the Giants had runners on the corners. In a frustrating continuation, Patrick Bailey’s single in the sixth was followed by a rally-ending play from Heriot Ramos.

Regrettably, this shutout marked the Giants’ seventh this season, a notably high number with just 32 games played. They’ve averaged 3.25 runs per game—the lowest in the league.

What it Means

After managing to beat the Phillies and clinch three consecutive wins, the Giants have now dropped to 0-4 on the road. This string of losses has tied them for the record of consecutive losing seasons within the same season, a frustrating pattern they’ve duplicated twice before.

Going up against a formidable lefty like McClanahan, that’s proving tricky for them, as he pitched six scoreless innings using only 73 pitches. The Giants have now posted a 2-7 record against left-handed starters this season—a stark contrast to last year, with a record of 19-35 against them overall. The only team performing worse is the Rockies.

Who is Hot

On a more positive note, Ray hasn’t allowed over three runs in any of his seven starts this season. He limited the Rays to just four hits over 6 1/3 innings, with only two home runs marking a rare occasion of multiple scores allowed. Interestingly, this game marked his second outing without a walk, showcasing his efficiency against a hitting-friendly team.

Who is Not?

Third base coach Hector Borg has been struggling with some costly decisions. For instance, he let Luis Arraez triple into the right field corner during the fourth inning, which abruptly shifted the situation from one out with a runner on second to none on second. That misstep likely contributed to their loss.

Borg had also mishandled an earlier game by allowing the ball to hit a defender’s glove and become unplayable, missing what could have been the winning opportunity.

To the Next

The Giants, having previously ended losing streaks at five games, now look to break the pattern with RHP Landen Loop taking the mound. With a 5-1 record and a 2.55 ERA, he’s allowed just one earned run in three previous starts at Oracle Park. The game begins at 3:05 p.m.
