Residents Protest in Reynosa Following Deadly Cartel Attack
In Reynosa, a city under cartel control in the Tamaulipas state, local residents decided to take a significant risk by protesting for peace. They blocked one of the main roads in the area, demanding the right to live without fear. This demonstration was sparked by a recent attack from Gulf Cartel gunmen that left two innocent civilians dead, despite the state claiming to be one of the safest in Mexico.
Earlier this week, the residents gathered and linked arms to obstruct Hidalgo Boulevard, a key route in the city, as a plea for peace. The protest, though short-lived, saw supportive honks from passing cars and cheers from onlookers. This move followed a daylight attack by Gulf Cartel gunmen who shot and killed two victims just a day before.
The shooting incident happened on Hidalgo Boulevard, where assailants targeted a driver. When the male victim attempted to escape, he was fired upon and fell victim to a barrage of bullets. Tragically, a teenage girl, on her way to school, was also hit and later died after her parents rushed her to a nearby hospital.
Initial reports indicate that the male driver might have been killed for trying to sell his vehicle to a criminal group without transferring necessary fees or taxes. The Gulf Cartel has been notorious for its reign of terror over local business activities, demanding extortion fees from regular citizens.
The shooting has ignited outrage among residents, who have begun to voice their concerns to local government officials. Many are pressuring the mayor while openly discussing the deteriorating security situation in their community.
By Friday evening, the Tamaulipas state government announced that seven individuals had been arrested in connection with the shooting. This action came after mounting protests and pressure from local media. However, like many previous cases, these arrests predominantly targeted low-ranking members of armed groups, while the higher echelons of the Gulf Cartel often remain untouched by law enforcement, as they continue to exert their influence with apparent government protection.
