Fernando Mendoza’s Possible Visit to the White House
Fernando Mendoza addressed a question on Saturday regarding a possible visit to President Donald Trump at the White House, aiming to celebrate the Indiana Hoosiers’ remarkable college football championship.
He mentioned that he thought his visit on May 11 coincided with the first day of organized team activities (OTAs) for the Las Vegas Raiders. However, it turns out he was mistaken, as OTAs don’t actually start until May 18.
“If it’s the first day of OTAs, I’m at the bottom of the totem pole here. I have to prove myself. I can’t miss practice,” Mendoza shared with reporters at the Raiders’ press conference. “As a rookie, I don’t think that’s a good look. I want to best serve my teammates, but I don’t think that’s going to accomplish that goal.”
Interestingly, the Raiders don’t have any offseason activities scheduled for May 11.
Mendoza’s Rise to Fame
Leading Indiana to a college football championship and achieving the first 16-0 season in the sport’s modern history certainly put Mendoza in the spotlight. The team announced recently that they would visit the White House to mark their achievements.
Last season, Mendoza made headlines as he won the Heisman Trophy, and his skills led him to be the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft by the Raiders.
In previous years, other college football champions like Trevor Lawrence and Joe Burrow visited Trump at the White House during his first term, with Lawrence visiting in 2019 and Burrow in 2020.
With all of this, a lot of attention is now directed toward whether Mendoza will end up meeting Trump, especially since his OTA visit won’t align with the White House celebration.
