Search Underway for Missing U.S. Soldiers in Morocco
Two American soldiers have gone missing during a joint military exercise in Morocco, prompting a search operation.
On Sunday, U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) announced that a rescue mission is underway for the two members, last seen near a training range associated with the African Lion exercise. The statement indicated that air, land, and sea resources are being utilized in the effort.
According to AFRICOM, on May 2, 2026, the two service members participating in African Lion 2026 were reported missing near the Cap Draa training range, close to Tintin, Morocco. A coordinated search involving U.S., Moroccan, and other African Lion forces has been initiated, including various military units from ground, air, and sea.
AFRICOM added that the situation is still being investigated, and the search is ongoing. Their primary focus remains on the soldiers and their families. As more information becomes available, updates will be provided.
African Lion is an annual multinational joint exercise aimed at improving readiness for crisis response and enhancing collective security. This year’s exercise involves nearly 6,000 troops from various nations and will take place across multiple countries, including Morocco, Tunisia, Senegal, and Ghana.
