New York City Drama Teacher Sentenced for Child Sexual Abuse Material
A drama teacher from New York City has been sentenced to 12 and a half years in prison after being arrested for possessing over 1,000 images and videos related to child sexual abuse. Some of the victims were as young as 6 years old.
Anthony Michael Souza faced serious allegations, with authorities claiming he had an extensive collection of child pornography that included depictions of “abuse and rape of children and infants.” Furthermore, he was also accused of engaging in sexual relations with underage teenage girls for over a year.
In an alarming revelation, Souza allegedly boasted about having “groomed” one of his younger students.
U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton remarked, “Parents in New York City trusted Anthony Michael Souza to keep their children safe. Souza betrayed that trust by sharing gruesome child pornography and preying on minors, including his own students.”
This sentencing follows a plea agreement.
According to a statement, Souza worked as an art and drama teacher in various public schools across the city for three years prior to his arrest in 2024. During this time, he taught children from kindergarten through high school. Reports indicate he sent and received approximately 250 videos and about 1,050 images containing child pornography, with some depicting the abuse of very young children.
Additionally, Souza reportedly filmed himself with a 15-year-old victim he met on Grindr and organized a “sex party” involving the underage teen.
Souza had previously worked as a “teaching artist” at TADA!, which is now known as the New York City Youth Theater. This organization has received substantial contracts from education and culture departments over the years.
The FBI first became aware of Souza in April 2024 when they found messages on a known pedophile’s phone. Posing as someone similar, agents contacted Souza, who then sent child pornography videos that included explicit content featuring children as young as 6.
While Souza hasn’t been directly accused of abusing his students, prosecutors mentioned a conversation where he and another individual discussed an unsuccessful attempt to “groom” one of his fifth-grade students. Interestingly, Souza seemed unaware that he was unwittingly revealing his actions to an undercover agent.
In his apology to the court, Souza expressed remorse, stating, “I betrayed the standards expected of me, especially as someone who works for youth. I am extremely sorry for the harm caused by my actions. The pain for the victims and our society is real and lasting. I accept responsibility for all of it.”
