Thomas Peters’ Uncertain Golf Future Post-LIV Golf
So, what’s next for Thomas Peters in golf if LIV Golf doesn’t continue? Returning to the PGA Tour doesn’t seem to be on the horizon.
The Belgian golfer mentioned he had plans to retire after LIV Golf shut down last month. This came after some doubts arose regarding his future in the league before an upcoming match against Mexico City. On “Dan on Golf,” Peters shared his thoughts with journalist Dan Rappaport.
“I was actually going to retire on Monday if they were going to let me go that quickly,” the 34-year-old said. He added, “The atmosphere was pretty bleak. After a few hours, everyone was just talking about it, and I got really tired of it.”
The future of LIV Golf itself is shaky now that the Saudi Public Investment Fund has pulled its financial support, leaving the management scrambling for funds. Reports have indicated that some anonymous LIV players are inquiring about a return to the PGA Tour.
However, Peters is definitely not among them. He echoed sentiments reminiscent of Taylor Swift, stating, “We’ll never get back together” with the PGA Tour.
“I’ll never go back to the PGA Tour. I didn’t enjoy that lifestyle,” he reflected. “It’s not really about being on the PGA Tour; it just wasn’t for me. I tried it, and I wasn’t happy there. Once LIV is gone, I might explore playing on the European tour, but honestly, I’m not sure.”
Peters has been part of LIV Golf since joining in 2023 and is currently a member of the 4Aces team, led by Dustin Johnson.
A meeting for players is planned for Tuesday at Trump National, where LIV’s next tournament is set to take place. This could offer some clarity for the golfers involved.
Peters admitted that he and his fellow players are “just guessing at this point.”
“If next year involves playing for $5 million, or joining the DP World Tour for $3 million closer to home, then I guess I’ll have to reassess,” he said. “Maybe other players will be part of that, but it’s really up to Scott and his team to navigate this situation. We’ll need to figure it out.”
