Toronto Maple Leafs’ Controversial GM Hire
There are certain expectations attached to recruiting for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Much like fans of the Yankees, Lakers, or Cowboys, hockey enthusiasts seem to take a somewhat bittersweet delight in the Leafs’ struggles. Yet, within that mix of schadenfreude, there’s a hint of empathy, a feeling that turns sour when the team makes a particularly foolish decision.
And on Monday, the Leafs made a truly questionable move. So questionable that it might rank among the worst general manager hires in professional sports history. The team announced that John Chayka is set to usher in a new era of hockey in Toronto. During the press conference, I caught a notable response from reporter Steve Simmons of the Toronto Star:
“You’re referring to the due diligence you conducted before hiring John, but over the last few days, I spoke with around 20 people from the National Hockey League, many of whom are pretty well-known. Out of those conversations, just one person supported the hire. The rest? They considered it a sham. They used words like ‘scam.’ Artist, liar, salesman. How could he reach a different conclusion in such a short time?”
The exchange between Simmons and Leafs president Keith Perry continued, with Perry curtly remarking, “I think you talked to the wrong person,” before the conversation became somewhat tense, especially with Chayka present. It was awkward. I’ve heard criticism of Chayka circulating, and I can’t say it’s entirely unfounded.
Chayka’s ascent began when he was appointed general manager of the Arizona Coyotes back in 2016—a rather unexpected choice then. He was seen as an up-and-coming analytics enthusiast who took the helm of an NHL team at just 26. However, this choice seemed more perplexing than justified, and it quickly became apparent that Chayka had major shortcomings.
His first significant decision was to overlook a key figure in Coyotes history. Franchise legend Shane Doan, looking to make a final appearance with the team, offered to step down to a lesser role, yet Chayka let him go instead. This move not only disappointed fans but also left Doan estranged from the organization.
Despite being touted as an analytical mastermind, there was little evidence to support this during Chayka’s Coyotes tenure. The team’s performance didn’t markedly improve, and Chayka’s three drafts were, frankly, disappointing. They failed to bring in any top-tier players, and the Coyotes faced penalties that stripped them of crucial draft picks after it was revealed that Chayka had violated NHL rules by conducting unauthorized scouting.
“This is unbelievable. Chayka was a complete fraud here. He cost the Coyotes a first-round pick and a second-round pick because of his cheating. He quit the team right before a critical phase. His treatment of Shane Doan was appalling. He wanted Doan gone, and it’s clear he was envious. Chayka is a fake, and it seems his only connection to land this position is through Tie Domi.”
Toronto’s choice to hire Chayka is, frankly, astounding. His history is marred with failures, and he’s been out of the hockey loop since leaving the Coyotes in 2020. Now, a person who’s been detached for six years has secured a prominent role within one of the most recognized teams in sports. There are pressing questions about how the Leafs arrived at this decision. Reports suggest that Chayka’s connections with the Domi family—especially with Leafs forward Max Domi and his father, Ty Domi—played a significant role. The Domis even introduced him to Mats Sundin, who serves as a senior advisor for the Leafs.
It’s hard to predict how this will turn out. While the Maple Leafs’ leadership struggles to justify Chayka’s appointment, the rest of the league seems to scoff at the choice. The pressing concern now might not be if Toronto will improve under his guidance, but rather the damage Chayka could inflict on the organization.
