JetBlue provides $99 discounted rescue fares following Spirit's closure

JetBlue is stepping up to assist travelers impacted by the recent grounding of Spirit Airlines, launching discounted fares and boosting services in important markets.

This comes on the heels of Spirit Airlines unexpectedly suspending operations last weekend, which resulted in thousands of flights being canceled and passengers rushing to find alternative arrangements.

In a press release, JetBlue announced it will provide stranded Spirit customers with $99 one-way “rescue fares” for those who can show a valid itinerary on the same route, available for travel until May 6.

Similarly, JetBlue plans to limit fares for select nonstop flights between Fort Lauderdale and San Juan—previously serviced by Spirit—to a maximum of $299 to avert any sudden price increases.

“This is truly tough news for the thousands of affected Spirit team members and our customers who were planning to travel on Spirit,” said JetBlue CEO Joanna Geraghty. “We want to help fill the void created by this loss.”

With significant operations in Fort Lauderdale and San Juan, JetBlue indicated it is well-positioned to accommodate some of the displaced demand.

The airline is adding service to 11 destinations and ramping up frequencies on existing routes, which include cities like Baltimore, Charlotte, Chicago, Detroit, and Houston, along with new service to Barranquilla and Cali in Colombia.

As part of this expansion, JetBlue also plans to return to Charlotte Douglas International Airport for the first time since 2024, reintroducing service to a market it had exited due to reduced demand.

JetBlue’s expanded flight schedule for Fort Lauderdale will bring the total number of daily departures to nearly 130 this summer, which is a record for the airport.

“South Florida is an important market for JetBlue, and we recognize this is a difficult time for many travelers,” Geraghty stated. “We are focused on stepping up in the near term by adding services, maintaining connectivity, and keeping our fares competitive so our customers can continue to travel with confidence.”

JetBlue noted it will keep adjusting its supply according to demand.

Additionally, the airline is providing support to Spirit employees. This includes extending travel privileges for pilots and flight attendants going home and offering job interview opportunities for open positions.

Travel experts have cautioned that the issues facing Spirit Airlines could impact airfare pricing nationwide. According to Lee Abbamonte, a New York-based travel expert, Spirit has played a crucial role in keeping prices competitive in many regions, and its absence may lessen the pressure on other airlines to maintain low fares.

He commented, “Without Spirit, there’s no reason for airfares to go down,” indicating that this shift could reduce consumer choices and ultimately lead to higher base prices for budget flyers.
