Jon Rahm Resolves Issues with DP World Tour Amid LIV Golf Uncertainty

On Tuesday, Jon Rahm spoke about putting an end to his ongoing feud with the DP World Tour while also addressing the unpredictability surrounding LIV Golf. His comments offered a glimpse into what the future might hold.

“Right now, I’ve got a few years left on my contract,” Rahm shared with reporters at LIV Golf Virginia before this week’s event. “I’m not really seeing a solution at this moment because I’m sure they made solid choices when drafting. Honestly, I’m not focused on that right now. There’s still a season to play, and I’m determined to compete in the majors. I’d rather not dwell on those uncertainties just yet.”

This is perhaps the most detailed statement Rahm has provided regarding the league’s future and his role since it was announced that Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund would halt its financial backing after this season.

There had been whispers about the league potentially facing financial troubles long before last month’s tournament in Mexico, and those worries were confirmed just last week.

“To be honest, the initial rumors came up during the tournament week in Mexico, so we all tried to brush them aside as just chatter,” he reflected. “We were competing, after all, and I didn’t want to waste energy on that during an already demanding week.”

“For me, it felt like reality hit a bit later. Like everyone else, I was surprised. It was honestly unexpected. I had heard about funding discussions in the past, but the future of the league? That’s really a question for the business folks,” he added.

Rahm also mentioned his previous disputes with the DP World Tour regarding tournament participation. He had criticized the European Tour for what he viewed as unfair requirements, noting that LIV players needed to compete in six events to qualify for the Ryder Cup, compared to four for non-LIV players.

“I reached out, and they responded positively. Clearly, we’ve come to an understanding. It’s no longer a source of stress,” Rahm stated.

It was confirmed that Rahm would rejoin the DP World Tour. “This includes settling all outstanding fines from 2024 onwards and participating in agreed-upon DP World Tour tournaments, excluding majors, for the remainder of the 2026 season,” he explained.

LIV Golf itself is currently racing against time to gather enough funds to keep the tour viable, especially following Saudi Arabia’s lucrative offers to attract top players from the PGA Tour.

Rahm’s future hinges on how well LIV can navigate this situation.

LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neill remarked, “It’s still too early for us. We haven’t entered the market or finalized our business plan yet. We’re still sorting things out, but it feels promising. We have a clear direction; we just need to refine it further.”

Brooks Koepka rejoined the PGA Tour after his LIV contract concluded last season, while Bryson DeChambeau’s future remains uncertain as his contract also ends this season.

Initially, Rahm stayed committed to the PGA Tour even as top players began to leave. However, he reportedly made waves by agreeing to a $300 million deal with LIV in December 2023, an unexpected turn for the golf community.

Now, though, his contract has surpassed those of other star players, placing him in a precarious position.
