Secretary of State Addresses Sailor Deaths Amid Project Freedom
During a recent press briefing at the White House, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that at least 10 sailors have lost their lives in connection with the ongoing tensions related to President Donald Trump’s “Project Freedom” initiative.
Rubio emphasized the commitment of the United States to protect freedom of navigation in critical maritime areas. He mentioned, “They’re isolated, they’re starving, they’re vulnerable and at least 10 sailors have died as a result, civilian sailors. Under this president, under President Trump, the United States will help our friends,” although he did not provide further specifics.
Additionally, he stated that the U.S. is actively engaged in enforcing a blockade around Iranian ports, reinforcing that the conflict with Iran remains unresolved. “We are only responding if attacked first. This is a defensive operation. If no shots are fired at these ships and no shots are fired at us, we’re not firing shots, but if we’re fired on, we will respond,” he clarified.
Rubio’s comments echoed those of War Secretary Pete Hegseth, who highlighted that the U.S. has been in communication with vessels, advising them to navigate away from the strait. Currently, hundreds of ships are lined up to pass through this crucial waterway. Tensions spiked earlier this year when the U.S. and Israel conducted strikes on February 28th to thwart Iran’s nuclear ambitions, driven by worries about maritime security and global shipping disruptions. Hegseth noted that prior to this escalation, approximately 20% of global oil supplies traveled through the strait daily.
Rubio suggested that Tehran needs to “accept the reality of the situation,” adding that U.S. representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are still pursuing diplomatic avenues.
