Russian strikes claim 27 lives in Ukraine just hours before the suggested ceasefire deadline

Escalating Violence in Eastern Ukraine

On Tuesday, Russian assaults in eastern Ukraine resulted in at least 27 fatalities, with a particularly deadly strike claiming 12 lives just hours before a proposed indefinite ceasefire from Kiev was set to begin at midnight.

This ceasefire, announced by Russia from May 8th to 9th, coincided with the celebrations marking the Soviet Union’s victory in World War II, including a military parade in Moscow’s Red Square.

In a counter-move, Ukraine put forward a plan for an indefinite ceasefire starting midnight local time Wednesday, urging Russia to adhere to it.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy expressed that a temporary halt for a military parade, while ongoing attacks persist, simply isn’t viable.

Andriy Sibiha, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, remarked on social media that with hours remaining before the ceasefire’s initiation, there was no indication Russia intended to cease hostilities; instead, it seemed to be intensifying its attacks.

Right after the deadline lapsed, Sergey Aksyonov, the Russian-appointed head of Crimea, noted on Telegram that Ukrainian drone strikes in Dzhankoy resulted in five civilian casualties. This incident likely happened just before the ceasefire was supposed to take effect, rather than after.

Russian authorities appeared largely dismissive regarding Ukraine’s ceasefire proposal.

Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, speaking shortly after midnight, lauded World War II veterans and remarked on the courage of Ukrainian military personnel as defenders of their homeland.

In Zaporizhia, regional governor Ivan Fedorov reported that airstrikes and drone attacks claimed the lives of at least 12, with 20 injured. Various buildings, including residential areas and local businesses, were severely damaged, causing significant fires.

Video footage showed vehicles on fire and thick black smoke rising, with medical teams assisting the wounded, many of whom were visibly injured.

Lehina Kharchenko from Zaporizhzhia City Council described the strike as a “cynical attack,” mentioning that guided airstrikes were followed by drone attacks utilizing Iranian-designed technology.

Meanwhile, northeast in Kramatorsk, three aerial bombs led to six deaths, as confirmed by local prosecutors, while casualties in the southeastern Dnipropetrovsk region included four fatalities, according to Zelenskiy.

Zelenskiy condemned these attacks as “cynical and senseless,” stressing their lack of any military purpose and predicted that such strikes on urban areas would not cease.

Governor Oleksandr Hanza reported three dead, 16 injured, with four individuals in critical condition following overnight events. Additionally, a Russian strike on a gas facility in the Poltava region resulted in five fatalities, including one from a neighboring area.

In the northern Soumi region, six injuries were reported due to another Russian airstrike, with two hospitalized.

Furthermore, the Russian state news agency TASS stated that two individuals died from a Ukrainian drone attack in the central Chuvash region. The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed that its air defense systems intercepted 93 Ukrainian drones over Crimea and other regions within a seven-hour timeframe.
