Indiana Primary Election Highlights Trump’s Influence

The primary elections in Indiana on May 5th served as a significant test of President Donald Trump’s political sway across several states. Candidates aiming to challenge Republican incumbents who had previously diverged from party lines by opposing redistricting were particularly in focus.

During the primary, at least six of the eight Indiana Senate candidates endorsed by Trump emerged victorious, most of them with substantial leads.

In December, a group of 21 Republican state senators joined their Democratic counterparts to vote against a new congressional map designed to create two additional Republican-leaning districts, which could enhance the GOP’s hold on the House. This initiative failed with a vote tally of 31-19, even as Trump cautioned he would target those Republicans in the forthcoming primaries.

The Republican senators facing re-election in the May primary who opposed redistricting include:

  • James Buck (District 21)
  • Spencer Deary (District 23)
  • Dan Darnuluk (District 1)
  • Greg Good (District 38)
  • Travis Holdman (District 19)
  • Rick Niemeyer (District 6)
  • Linda Rogers (District 11)
  • Greg Walker (District 41)

Notably, Republican senators Eric Basler (District 39) and Kyle Walker (District 31) also voted against the districting map, though neither is seeking re-election.

Trump has publicly backed eight of the candidates in these races, stating, “Good luck to the great Indiana Senate candidates who are running against people who don’t care about our country or maintaining a majority in Congress. Eight great patriots are challenging long-standing RINOs. Let’s see how those RINOs do tonight!” on social media.

Polling in Indiana ended at 6 PM local time, with results beginning to be announced shortly thereafter.

Among the early results, Blake Fichter, a Trump supporter in District 19, gained an early lead over incumbent Holdman. This political contest was expected to conclude within two hours of voting’s end.

In District 21, James Buck, also a Trump-endorsed candidate, faced competition but appeared optimistic. Michelle Davis succeeded in defeating Walker in District 41 with Trump’s backing.

Challenger Trevor de Vries unseated incumbent Delnuruk in District 1, while Dr. Brian Schmutzler triumphed against Rogers in District 11. Furthermore, Jeff Ellington successfully claimed Basler’s vacant seat in District 39.

Looking ahead, Trump had high hopes for the 38th District, though his favored candidate Brenda Wilson lost to incumbent Good, while Deary’s contest with pro-Trump challenger Paula Copenhaver was still too close to call as of Wednesday morning.

U.S. Senator Jim Banks characterized the evening as “a big night for MAGA in Indiana,” while Eric Daugherty from Florida’s Voice lauded the outcomes, suggesting that “the RINO reign is nearing its end.” He noted that Good’s victory over Wilson was “one of the few wins for the traitorous RINO tonight!”
