NYC Hospitals Achieve Top Patient Safety Ratings

In a recent assessment of hospitals across the United States, over 20 facilities in the New York City area received the highest patient safety ratings. However, it’s worth noting that some could not be evaluated due to various factors.

Institutions such as Catholic Health, Mount Sinai, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, Northwell Health, and NYU Langone Health have all been awarded an “A” grade by the Leapfrog Group, as announced on Wednesday. This is significant, especially since more than 2,300 hospitals nationwide are rated from “A” to “F” based on their performance in preventing medical errors, accidents, injuries, and infections acquired during healthcare.

Interestingly, Leapfrog’s recent report indicates that about 450 hospitals did not receive any safety classification. This stems from recent federal decisions claiming that Leapfrog’s rating methods could be considered “deceptive and unfair.” An appeal is currently underway regarding this situation.

In a statement, NYU Langone Health pointed out that only about 1% of hospitals in the U.S. have managed to achieve 12 consecutive “A” ratings, highlighting their impressive commitment to safety and quality.

The institutions that earned this “A” rating include Tisch Hospital, the Helen L. and Martin S. Kimmel Pavilion in Manhattan, NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn, and NYU Langone Hospital on Long Island.

Dr. Alec C. Kimmelman, Dean and CEO of NYU Langone Health, remarked, “Safe, high-quality care is the foundation of NYU Langone Health. Receiving our 12th consecutive A rating from Leapfrog reflects the dedicated efforts of the over 54,000 individuals across our health system who prioritize patient care each day.”

Catholic Health also celebrated St. Francis Hospital and Heart Center on Long Island for achieving its 17th consecutive “A” rating, making it a leader among New York hospitals since the safety rating program began in 2012. Additionally, three more hospitals from Catholic Health performed exceptionally well.

NewYork-Presbyterian highlighted the achievement of its eight hospitals earning “As,” emphasizing this as a testament to their commitment to quality and safety in healthcare.

Northwell Health stands out with 15 hospitals rated “A.” Dr. John DeAngelo, President and CEO of Northwell Corporation, noted that the top grades reflect the quality of care provided at their facilities, which is consistently recognized across various national ratings and comparisons.

In total, 40 hospitals in New York received “A” ratings. On the flip side, a few facilities, including Brookdale Hospital Medical Center, Interfaith Medical Center in Brooklyn, Nassau University Medical Center on Long Island, and St. John’s Episcopal Hospital in Queens, were given “D” ratings.

Despite this, it’s noteworthy that no New York hospitals received failing grades this time. Leapfrog releases these evaluations biannually, making their observations particularly significant for both patients and healthcare providers.
