A rideshare driver from New Jersey has been arrested after being accused of harassing students at Princeton University and attempting to coax them into his vehicle for sexual purposes.
DiMario Winter, a 28-year-old from Spotswood, faces multiple charges, including harassment and enticement, as well as disorderly conduct, according to a spokesperson from the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office.
The first incident reportedly took place around noon on April 16. A Princeton University student mentioned to authorities that while walking on Prospect Street, a man in a black Jeep Patriot stopped to ask for directions. During their conversation, he allegedly handed the student a $100 bill, exited the vehicle, and then approached her, demanding sexual acts. Understandably, the student panicked and ran away, leaving the money behind.
The following day, on April 17, at about 9:30 a.m., another Princeton student was walking down Ivy Lane when a driver in a dark-colored van or SUV also asked for directions. The suspect then allegedly offered the student a $100 bill and attempted to persuade him to leave with him, which led the victim to return the money before the driver sped off.
Investigations into these incidents pointed to Winter as a suspect, and it was later discovered that he worked as a Lyft driver. In response to the situation, a spokesperson for Lyft stated that they take such reports very seriously and confirmed that he has been permanently removed from their platform while they assist law enforcement with the investigation.
Winter was taken into custody on April 30 but was later released, awaiting his court appearance.
