Preakness Stakes Update

There’s no tempo for this year’s Preakness Stakes.

Specifically, the winner of the Kentucky Derby won’t take part, which means there’s no chance for a Triple Crown winner in 2026.

It’s just days since Golden Tempo triumphed at the Kentucky Derby, marking the first step in the Triple Crown series.

In a statement, Shelley Devaux Racing explained, “After team discussions, we’ve chosen to skip the Preakness Stakes with Golden Tempo. We truly appreciate the excitement surrounding the potential for a Triple Crown win. The support from fans, owners, and everyone involved has been overwhelming.”

They added, “Golden gave us an unforgettable performance in the Derby. Given the effort he put forth, we believe that allowing him some extra time is the best choice for his future. His health and long-term well-being will always be our priority.”

The current plan is to have Golden Tempo compete in the Belmont Stakes later this year at Saratoga Race Course in New York, since Belmont Park is undergoing renovations.

This marks the eighth consecutive year without a Triple Crown winner, following Justify’s achievement in 2018 when he won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont.

Moreover, Golden Tempo’s victory is notable as it’s the first time in the Kentucky Derby’s 152-year history that a trained filly has won the race.

On another note, jockey Jose Ortiz celebrated his first win at the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, as his horse overcame quite the odds.

This year’s Preakness is scheduled for May 16 at Laurel Park in Maryland, with Pimlico Race Course currently undergoing renovations.
