Gio Lopez Critiques His Time at UNC
Former University of North Carolina quarterback, Gio Lopez, recently made some pointed remarks about his experiences with the football program under Bill Belichick.
Lopez, who was the starter for the Tar Heels in 2025, has now transferred to Wake Forest, a rival in the ACC, for the upcoming season. In a recent chat with Sports Illustrated, he shared some not-so-flattering insights about the state of the North Carolina football program during Belichick’s tenure.
“Honestly, it felt stifling there. Like there was no air to breathe,” Lopez expressed. “At Wake Forest, we have the energy and drive that makes us enjoy the game so much more. It’s just like—well, I guess you could say it was a breath of fresh air. It was definitely my first time facing such high-pressure situations on that scale.”
During his 11 games at UNC, Lopez accumulated 1,747 passing yards and 10 touchdowns. Yet, he characterized his time in Chapel Hill as feeling more like just a job.
The Tar Heels wrapped up the 2025 season with a disappointing 4-8 record, and Lopez described the atmosphere after the initial game as one of merely getting through each day, often losing sleep over the next day’s challenges.
Belichick’s inaugural season with the Tar Heels was muddled by off-field controversies, including his relationship with someone significantly younger than him.
Bernie Lopez, Gio’s father, also provided a bleak perspective on the experience within the UNC football program under Belichick.
“I faced ridicule for trying to voice my concerns,” Bernie shared with Sports Illustrated. “I might have spotted a dangerous play developing, and if I tried to intervene, I was criticized for it.”
Eventually, this all contributed to Gio feeling detached from the sport during his time at North Carolina.
