Maxey Struggles as Knicks Take Game 2
Tyrese Maxey faced significant challenges against the Celtics, especially in the crucial Game 7. However, he hasn’t quite found the same rhythm in the Eastern Conference semifinals, largely due to Mikal Bridges’ exceptional defensive play.
In Game 2 of the series, Bridges showcased his skills again, effectively limiting Maxey to just seven of his total 26 points during the second half. Bridges hit a critical jumper late in the fourth quarter, leading the Knicks to a 108-102 victory at Madison Square Garden. With this win, the Knicks are now just two victories away from returning to the Conference Finals.
Against the Celtics, Maxey averaged an impressive 30 points. But against the Knicks, that number has decreased to 19.5, with a shooting percentage of only 37.5 percent. It’s worth noting that he also turned the ball over 10 times, with six of those coming during this game.
“Honestly, it all started with Mikal. He’s really stepped up for us on defense,” said Miles McBride. “The team is really focused, and Mikal’s a tough competitor. He’s going to continue pushing himself and stepping up when needed.”
Interestingly, Bridges faced his own hardships early in the series against the Hawks but has transformed his game in recent outings. Coach Mike Brown considered bringing him off the bench but opted to keep him in the starting lineup. Good decision, as Bridges not only shined in the clincher but also built on that performance in this series, scoring 18 points on 9 of 13 shooting, alongside five rebounds, demonstrating robust defense in Game 2.
Brown remarked on Bridges’ continued contributions, particularly in key moments. “He got in the right spots and made some big shots for us,” he said, reflecting on the player’s performance on both ends of the court. It was indeed an excellent game for Bridges, showcasing his versatility and impact.
