Greetings, dear reader,
It’s interesting how the decline of systems often creeps in—slow at first, but then it culminates in a breaking point.
ABIGAIL’S CONFLAGRATION
Now, after four months as Virginia’s governor, Abigail Spanberger is facing quite the predicament. It’s not looking good for this rising star among Democrats.
There’s turmoil within the party. An initiative aimed at redrawing district maps from a 6:5 Democratic advantage to a 10:1 edge, which would nearly guarantee a House majority, is likely to flounder under judicial scrutiny. Behind the scenes, there’s been significant backbiting among the factions involved.
And this discord is starting to surface in the media.
A significant loss for a newly-elected governor would generally spell disaster for future aspirations, especially if it morphs into a full-blown civil war. This redistricting effort, which some argue is unconstitutional in various ways, was pushed forward with Spanberger’s enthusiastic yet, perhaps a bit hypocritical, endorsement. The consequences of failure would go beyond mere superficial damage. Someone is bound to take the blame, and given her strong public backing of this controversial move, it’s likely Spanberger will bear the brunt of it.
To add to the tumult, with the Supreme Court recently ruling against race-based districts, if Virginia Democrats lose in court, it would be a tough blow. States like Tennessee are already redrawing their lines, Louisiana is expected to follow suit, and Florida has just completed its own redistricting. The Democrats’ hope to leverage gerrymandering for political gain now largely rests on Virginia, but those hopes are fading fast. Spanberger could find herself at the center of a significant national issue for the party.
But there’s more, dear reader!
Two—yes, two—prosecutors in Virginia are under investigation. Arlington County’s Parisa Dehghani-Tafti and Fairfax County’s Steve Descano are being looked into for allegedly providing lenient prosecution deals to violent illegal immigrants. It’s noteworthy that both have received substantial support from entities associated with George Soros.
The outcomes of these investigations might feel almost inconsequential—sometimes, as the saying goes, the process itself is punishment.
Any information uncovered will likely make waves nationally and serve as a guideline for scrutinizing other prosecutors. This presents yet another challenge for the national Democratic party right in Spanberger’s backyard, and thus far, she hasn’t addressed it.
Known for avoiding the press (thanks Nick Minock) when pressed about contentious issues, it seems Spanberger might soon be donning her running shoes once again.
On another note, her key ally in the statehouse just had her offices raided by the FBI as part of a corruption inquiry, which also included a local marijuana dispensary.
Interestingly enough, the center of this investigation is Virginia State Sen. L. Louise Lucas, the first black woman to hold the title of president pro tempore of the state senate. She’s a fervent supporter of Spanberger and was one of the main advocates for the now-imperiled redistricting attempt.
Now, however, she finds herself under scrutiny for a potential bribery scheme related to her marijuana business.
A historic figure, caught up in a marijuana scandal! Quite the trailblazer, indeed!
A clear sign of Lucas’s troubles? Spanberger has remained silent about defending her.
To top it all off, there’s movement in Loudoun County where legislators are trying to integrate a taxpayer-funded rent program for illegal immigrants into standard legislation. Understandably, Republicans there are alarmed, while the Democrats suggest that “the fiscal impacts are unknown at this time.”
Had enough excitement yet, dear reader? Remember, it’s all happening in tandem.
In addition to the redistricting woes, Spanberger has been relatively quiet amid these unfolding issues. Various proposals—funding schemes, prosecution strategies, and corruption accusations—are collapsing around her. They are all too public and could draw national attention. She’s at the epicenter of a storm that could jeopardize the party’s goals.
While she contemplates her next steps, the flames are only growing.
